Activities/Attractions: Assisi is one of Italy's prime tourist attractions; a simple and peaceful town with a rich religious heritage. It rejoices in many good, small hotels, excellent restaurants and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. The town is situated in green Umbria, on the slopes of Monte Subasio. Assisi is around two hours by train from Rome - there are a few direct trains, otherwise you change at Foligno. Perugia is a short direct journey away, by bus or train.

Assisi is a good town for wandering and exploring. Its narrow and steep lanes are picturesque and conceal plenty of surprises: a hidden restaurant, a faded fresco, a stunning view. Occasional olive groves are dotted among the stairways and rooftops, where shy cats creep out of sight of passers-by. Traversing Assisi's streets is like stepping back into time. The medieval stonework within much of the architecture graces the town with an ancient feel.

There are a few exceptional Assisi attractions not to be missed during a visit. Basilica di San Francesco is, without a doubt, the most popular attraction. The Basilica is the true jewel of Assisi, brimming with Gothic masterpieces by famous artists such as Giotto, Pietro Lorenzetti, and Simone Martini.

Santa Maria degli Angeli, another basilica inaugurated in the late sixteenth century, is another of the choice Assisi attractions. It's notable for a bronze statue of Madonna as well as the Doric architectural style it is designed in.

St Francis of Assisi spent significant time meditating and praying in the Eremo della Carceri, a hilltop monastery open to visitors. This retreat is often visited by tourists taking Italy tours on horseback. The adjacent valley and rock cave are great examples of the peaceful nature of this religious and historic site and exemplify the tranquility of the town. From the monastery, a walk around the cobbled streets of Assisi Italy presents ample opportunity for shopping, dining, and more sightseeing.

"Malvarina is a wonderful oasis of peace on the slopes of Monte Subasio, with a panoramic outlook over Umbria .Claudio and family are warm and welcoming, and the place has the air of a glorious, rustic, home away from home. A brisk walk through olive groves takes you up to the Mt Subasio national park; a short drive takes you to Assisi, and the hill towns of Spello, Montefalco and Bevagna. Every evening one dines on fabulous meals made from local ingredients, finished with a glass or two of "centerbe" - a liqueur made from "one hundred herbs". This is the real Italy: a family working the land, away from tourist-ville. Here is peace, contentment, food for the soul and the body. This is Italy at its best."

"This was my third visit to Malvarina and I have planned three more visits for the spring. Each time, I stayed/will stay for eight nights. The hospitality at this family owned business is outstanding. Our rooms and baths were spacious and clean. We chose to have breakfasts and dinners at Malvarina. Maria and her staff provided a feast every night. On one of the afternoons, we participated in a cooking class with Maria, a wonderful experience. Claudio and Fillipo assisted us with our days' sightseeing or hiking itineraries. I cannot imagine going to Umbria and not staying at Malvarina."

"My husband and I stay every year in Agriturismos in all parts of Italy. This is the best of many very fine ones. La Ginestra, our apartment for a week, was well appointed, had a good bed, a good bathroom and shower, a beautiful view out over the valley and was only 15 minutes to Assisi."

"Visit Malvarina if you want to have an amazing multi-course Umbrian dinner in pleasant rustic surroundings. The dinners were a wonderful marathon of country dishes, fresh products and wine. The views from this hillside farm are amazing and you feel very far from the maddening crowd."

"Our stay in Malvarina was a wonderful experience. They are located off the beaten path but what a way to feel the culture of Italy without loads of tourists. We were close to the Umbrian villages for day trips, had nice accommodations and excellent meals cooked by Mother Maria and her assistants. Everyone was always friendly, helpful and full of smiles. We look forward to our next visit."
