Activities/Attractions: Allow yourself to fall in love with the Alentejo plain and discover this peaceful retreat in the heart of Alto Alentejo, only 45 km from Évora, from which you will be able to enjoy the magnificent view of the medieval town of Monsaraz, savour the regional cuisine, go on walking or bicycle tours, visit prehistoric monuments, discover neighbouring villages or even enjoy the beauty of the lakes formed by the waters of Alqueva.

Built on a promontory (a rarity in the Alentejo plain), the medieval castle town of Monsaraz rises like a scene from some enchanted tale, past and present mingling in a unique feast of unparalleled beauty and history.

Only five minutes on the road from Monte Saraz, this settlement is one of the oldest in Portugal, preserving almost untouched the whitewashed row of houses of limestone and schist, the castle and the walls, the churches and the old courts, with their precious frescos.

Occupied since prehistoric times because of its privileged defensive position (the surrounding megalithic monuments prove this), it was inhabited successively by the Romans, Arabs, Jews and Christians, providing the visitor with a surprising incursion into the history of the Iberian Peninsula.

Traditional Alentejo cooking contains unique flavours and aromas, to be savoured and lingered over. It is based on pork or lamb, as well as game such as boar, hare and partridge.

"Charming and well decorated. Monte Saraz is a very nice place indeed. It has been decorated recently by the new owner in a minimalistic way, which allows you to stay with comfort and tranquility in restored Alentejan cottages. The breakfast was abundant and very good tasting. We stayed for a couple of days and enjoyed it very much."

"We just came back from a 3 nights stay in Monte Saraz, it was just perfect and probably the best place we ever stay in. We are already missing the gorgeous breakfast (fresh warm bread every morning), the amazing swimming pool (spa water) and grounds. Monsaraz is a lovely little village and it's a great place to have relaxing holiday."

"My husband and I toured around Portugal and Spain for our honeymoon and Monte Saraz was by far the most charming and beautiful place we stayed. Immediately upon arrival, we knew it was a place we could settle into. Marc, the owner, was extremely relaxed and welcoming and went out of his way to be friendly."

General Information: Welcome to Monte Saraz in Monsaraz, Portugal ... an eighteenth-century 'Monte' (a typical Alentejo farming estate) which has been restored to its original state, offering repose and quality during your stay, provided in comfortable, separate farmhouses or in suites located in the main building.

In Monte Saraz you can find tranquility at any time of year, be it by the warmth of a good hearth or swimming in the swimming-pool shaped by the arches of an old olive oil press. Surrounded by an ancient olive grove, by vegetable plots and orchards, it hints at a scenery worthy of Paradise, designed for those who appreciate the good things in life..

  • Apart from the elegance of its traditional architecture, Monte Saraz offers the comfort found in any modern residence (such as central heating)
  • It includes the Casa de Lagar (the main building) where breakfast is served, containing the two suites, and four small separate farmhouses
  • Furnished and decorated in a rustic Minimalist style, with the occasional example of ethnic art collected by the proprietor, Marc Lammerink, during his numerous journeys
  • A privileged space, in which to rest far away from the confusion of the city, the estate (‘Monte’) is surrounded by bird-song and by the renown olive grove of Pega

"This is a great place to stay to explore some of the Alentejo. Very pretty place with lovely pool and great views of Monsaraz. Breakfast great and some lovely restaurants nearby. Rooms are great - some self contained apartments. Well worth visiting and they accepted my little dog."

"Such a fantastic place! Thank you for letting us spend a few days in such a great spot. We loved every moment and only wish we could stay longer. We regard this as the highlight of our fantastic vacation in Portugal. Hopefully one day we can come back to this hidden paradise , for the wine, the pool, the garden and the people."
