Activities/Attractions: The Dublin Region is situated to the east of Ireland and occupies an area of 92,200 hectares. The Region is located on the coast with mountain ranges to the south and rich pastures to the west and north.

Dublin is the third smallest county in Ireland, yet it is home to a third of the country's population. Popular attractions include the Ardgillan Victorian Garden, at Ardgillan Demesne, and the 'Dublin Bay Sea Thrill' at Dun Laoghaire - an exhilarating ride on life rafts. Malahide Castle, with its lovely parkland and collection of paintings, is well worth a visit.

Dublin is also a great location for horse riding and golf, with one of the world's best links courses at Portmarnock. Picturesque coastal villages like Howth and Killiney offer a refreshing break from Dublin city.

The busy village of Swords lies west of Malahide. Legend has it that Swords was founded at a well blessed by St. Colmcille. The ancient ruins of a Round Tower can be found in the grounds of the Church of Ireland.

Driving from Dublin 2mi/3km north of Santry, on the N1, is Swords, with the ruins of Swords Castle (13th-15th C.; National Monument). The castle, pentagonal in plan, was the seat of the archbishops of Dublin. It preserves a chapel, the gatehouse and towers. Adjoining the village church are a 74ft/22.5m high round tower (entrance and roof modern). Other places of interest in the area during your visit in Swords are:
  • Malahide Castle and gardens
  • Skerries and Ardgillen Castle and Park
  • Beaches and many golf courses

"There are several nice B and B's in the village of Swords, near the Dublin Airport. This is very convenient if you are flying out - as I did back to London. There is a cool castle in the village, and the B and Bs are nearby. Castlespring is run by a nice lady named Cepta Morton. She is very helpful with tourist info, and prepares a wonderful breakfast."
