Activities/Attractions: Bruges (Brugge) is one of Europe's best preserved examples of a medieval historic town. It has maintained its historic fabric over the centuries, the original Gothic constructions forming part of the town's identity.

As one of the commercial and cultural capitals of Europe, Brugge developed cultural links to several parts of the world, however, artistically, it is most closely associated with the school of Flemish Primitive paintings.

The compact size of the old city, lined with canals, make it perfect for exploring on foot. The historic centre of Brugge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Perhaps the most astonishing thing about Bruges is the consistently warm welcome its residents provide to the swarms of visitors. The basis for this is more than mere economics - those who live in Bruges love their city and can well appreciate that others want to experience it.

  • Neatly marking the city centre is the Markt, overwhelmingly medieval in character this cobbled square houses some of Bruges’ impressive gothic and renaissance buildings
  • Bruges’ other beautiful square is the Burg which once again contains architectural treasures but also features many pavement cafes and bars which are the perfect spot to take in the atmosphere
  • The Basilica of the Holy Blood is named after its prize relic; a vial containing a few drops of Christ’s blood which found its way to Belgium about 1,000 years ago
  • The Church of our Lady is one of the city’s most interesting churches containing many works of art, most notable being Michelangelo's Madonna with Child marble
  • Bruges’ premier art museum, the Groeninge Museum, displays mainly Dutch and Belgian art
  • The Gruuthuse Museum is housed in the former Palace of the Lords of Gruuthuse, the building itself is as much an attraction as its various collections displayed inside
  • For a more light-hearted outing head to the Choco Story Museum, here Bruges celebrates its love of chocolate with a fascinating account of the history of chocolate
  • Lake Minnewater in the south of the city is ideal for a picnic or just a relaxing walk
