Activities/Attractions: Patzcuaro is an ancient, highland town with stately colonial architecture in the heart of Purhepecha Indian country. In the course of its history Patzcuaro has been chosen as capital city for its geographic situation, for its charm and natural beauty. With the centuries Patzcuaro has become a true living museum.
The town is next to the lake which bears its name where Indian traditions are still preserved and well alive. Local artists and artisans will engage you into knowing their ancestral culture. The purity of their craft and the variety of their art will surprise and seduce you. The beauties of the archeological sites and of the lakeside villages will make you love this unique region of Mexico.
"In one word: Exquisite. In a few: This was the best hotel we stayed in Mexico and one of the best in our long and rich travel history. The house is lovingly decorated and maintained, the attention to detail is staggering and the hosts are the nicest people. Located perfectly right in the city centre, this haven of tranquility and impeccable taste is exactly where one wants to stay at this beautiful colonial town. Highly recommended, worth a trip on its own."
"If you love history and beauty, then you must stay at the Casa de la Real Aduana when you visit Patzcuaro. This five-room inn is an exquisitely restored 16th century casa, the former home of the Spanish nobleman who oversaw the customs collection. Each room is different and each is special - filled not only with wonderful art from Mexico, but from Europe and other locations. The two proprietors, a talented photographer and a talented interior designer, are French and Mexican and have lived in different locales around the world. They are sophisticated without being in the least pretentious. In addition to running their hotel, they coordinate arts events (music and painting most recently) at the La Folia Cultural Center. The Casa is relaxed, quiet, and very comfortable. The breakfast (included in the price) is filling and excellent. The location (less than half a block from the main plaza) could not be better. A feast for the eye and a wonderful place to stay."
